Curriculum Overview

Math Direct covers foundational math skills through 150 scripted lessons organized into 7 sequential phases. Each phase builds on the one before it.

50+ Concepts
7 Phases
K–4 Grades

Phase 1: Foundation (Lessons 1–20)

Introduces numbers 0–10 through rote counting, one-to-one correspondence, numeral identification, and comparing quantities. Children learn to count objects, read numerals, and understand concepts like more, less, and equal.

Phase 2: Counting & Comparing (Lessons 21–40)

Extends number knowledge to 20. Introduces number patterns, counting by twos, ordering numbers, and the concept of addition through combining groups. Children begin to see the relationship between counting and adding.

Phase 3: Addition (Lessons 41–65)

Teaches addition facts to 10 using number lines, count-on strategies, doubles, and number bonds. Children practice writing equations and develop fluency with basic addition facts.

Phase 4: Subtraction (Lessons 66–85)

Introduces subtraction as taking away and as the inverse of addition. Covers subtraction facts to 10, fact families, and the relationship between addition and subtraction.

Phase 5: Place Value (Lessons 86–105)

Teaches tens and ones, counting to 100, reading and writing two-digit numbers, and addition and subtraction within 20. Children learn that the position of a digit determines its value.

Phase 6: Fluency (Lessons 106–125)

Builds mental math strategies including making ten, near-doubles, and compensation. Children practice two-digit plus one-digit addition and develop speed and accuracy with known facts.

Phase 7: Mastery (Lessons 126–150)

Covers two-digit addition and subtraction with and without regrouping, word problems, and mixed operations. Children apply everything they have learned to solve multi-step problems.
